After talking it over with my cohorts in Art Clout, we’ve decided on a new format for this previously infrequent newsletter. We want this to become a resource for artists and art lovers to rely on for events, news, and information about the Long Beach visual arts scene (the LBVA).
No fanfare needed, let’s get into it
This Is Surreal
Let’s be honest, I didn’t expect the Long Beach Creative Group to showcase an entire show of LowBrow and Pop Surrealism, but it’s a welcome addition to their show lineup. The LBCG announced the open call for the POP SURREALISM show (a bit on the nose, but ok). Check out the details of the open call if you feel like your work would fit, but bring your A-game because not only have the LBCG spread their wings on art genres, but they’re spreading their region too, now accepting any artists who reside in LA or OC. The deadline for submitting is March 22nd, 2023.
Zine Scene in Bixby Knoll
After a few years off due to the pandemic, LA Zine Fest is happening again, but this year in Long Beach at the Expo Center in Bixby Knolls. Zine Fest just opened the doors on their call for entries (I applied, fingers crossed) and spots are limited to 100 participants, so if you consider yourself a zinester and want to toss in your entry, the deadline is March 24, 2023.
Skondovitch: A Legacy
On March 11th, between 4-7 pm, Greenly Art Space is hosting the opening reception to their retrospective on abstract modernist, Alfred Skondovitch. The show will include a mix of paintings from large oil and acrylic abstract works on canvas from the 1950s to selected Holocaust pieces documenting his experience as a witness during the Bergen Belsen concentration camp liberation, to his figure studies and landscapes. The show runs from March 11th to May 12th, 2023
Destined for the Stars
There was always going to be a time when we would think of Dave Van Patten and say to ourselves, “I remember when he was painting murals on 4th Street.” Ladies and gentlemen, that time might be now because Long Beach’s painter of fun, quirky, and thought-provoking figures with animal heads has made the Big Time. Van Patten and his collaborators were awarded a grammy for their art direction on the recent limited edition Grateful Dead box set.
Dave, when you look out at Long Beach from your future home in the Hollywood Hills, make sure to wave. (via LBPost)
Angelica Fegley at District Wine
As part of our contribution to showcasing visual artists in Long Beach, we’ve teamed up with District Wine to showcase an artist every couple of months. This session we’re showing Angelica Fegley and her bold abstracts.
“My paintings begin and end with feelings. As I excavate the layers of my inner landscape my paintings evolve through multiple layers of poured paint and textures which trigger other abstract forms. Both the selection of the colors I use and the actual physical action of pouring the paint are emotional processes to me. My goal is to draw the viewer into the feelings I express so they can explore their own, to experience deeply personal as well as universal feelings and the truth that links us all.” - Angelica Fegley
Angelica’s work will be on display at District Wine until March 31st.
And that will do it for this round of the LBVA. If you enjoyed this new format, drop us a comment. Also comment, if you have any news you’d like to share or perhaps become a featured artist in the future.
Thanks, and we’ll talk soon.
